LED Battens
Which LED batten for which space?
Start from the space: required illuminance, humidity, dust, impact risk and mounting height. The values below are guideline figures from EN 12464-1 for indoor workplaces; for a specific project, our free lighting study works out the layout and quantities.
| Area | Maintained illuminance | Recommended protection | Recommended batten |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warehouse, storage, stockroom | 100 to 200 lx (300 lx for order picking) | IP40, IP65 if dusty | 150 cm in continuous rows, linkable |
| Workshop, maintenance, production | 300 to 500 lx depending on task precision | IP65 wherever there is dust or splashing | Waterproof 120 or 150 cm, 4000 K |
| Car park, garage, bike storage | 75 lx in traffic areas, 100 to 200 lx at entrances | IP65 | With motion sensor, 6000 K |
| Food processing, wash-down areas | 300 to 500 lx | IP66, IP69K for high-pressure washing | IP69K waterproof |
| Corridors, stairwells, plant rooms | 100 to 200 lx | IP40 to IP65 | 60 or 120 cm, with motion sensor or emergency lighting |
The criteria that make the difference
Length and luminous flux
Length sets the available output: allow around 2,200 lm for a 60 cm 20 W batten and 5,600 to over 7,000 lm for a 150 cm model. In a large space, long, well-spaced rows of battens beat lots of small light points: illuminance is more uniform and installation is faster.
Luminous efficacy (lm/W)
Our battens range from 110 to 155 lm/W. For the same output, a 135 lm/W batten uses almost 20% less energy than a 110 lm/W one: in a warehouse lit 10 to 12 hours a day, the difference shows up on the bill fast. It's the first figure to compare between two products.
Ingress protection (IP)
- IP20 to IP40: dry, clean areas (technical offices, stockrooms, corridors).
- IP65: dust and water splashes (workshops, car parks, garages, sheltered outdoor areas).
- IP66: powerful water jets, jet cleaning.
- IP69K: high-pressure, high-temperature washing, typical in food processing.
Colour temperature and colour rendering
4000 K (neutral white) suits most workshops and technical offices. 6000 K (cool white) is common in warehouses and car parks. For workstations, aim for a CRI of at least 80, the minimum the standard requires for most activities. CCT versions let you set the colour temperature on site and keep a single SKU in stock.
Useful options on site
- Linking: several battens connected to each other, with a single power feed per row. Stick to the maximum number of battens per row given on the datasheet.
- Motion sensor: in transit areas, the lights only come on when someone is there.
- Built-in emergency lighting: keeps the lights on during a mains power failure.
- Suspended mounting: brings the light closer to the work surface under a high ceiling.
Relamping: replacing T8 fluorescent tubes
Two options. The simplest: replace the whole fitting with an LED batten with integrated LEDs, no ballast or starter to deal with. If the existing housings are in good condition, you can also switch to T8 LED tubes or battens for T8 LED tubes; in that case, check the wiring of the chosen tube (ballast and starter removal depending on the model). At the same length, 60, 120 or 150 cm, the fixing centres generally match the existing installation.
Mounting height and alternatives
Battens perform best up to around 5 or 6 m. Above that, switch to LED high bays or linear high bays, designed for high ceilings. For a complete building, our warehouse lighting, industrial lighting and car park lighting pages bring together the right ranges.
Warranty, quantities and support
Warranty runs from 2 to 5 years depending on the range, with 5 years on part of the Silumen Pro+ battens: the term is shown on each product page. Some products come in packs of 10 with volume pricing. For a project or a tender, request a quote: reply within 24 business hours, with quantities, in-stock alternatives and datasheets.
Frequently asked questions
How many LED battens do I need to light a space?
Quick estimate: multiply the area (m²) by the target illuminance (lux), then divide by the batten's luminous flux multiplied by 0.5 to allow for losses and ageing. Example: a 100 m² workshop at 300 lx with 6,000 lm battens needs about 100 × 300 / (6,000 × 0.5) = 10 battens. For a reliable result (height, wall colours, layout), request our free lighting study.
IP65, IP66 or IP69K: which one should I choose?
IP65 protects against dust and water splashes: the right level for workshops, car parks and garages. IP66 withstands powerful water jets, useful if the premises are jet-cleaned. IP69K is for areas washed at high pressure and high temperature, such as food processing.
Can I keep the old fluorescent tube housings?
Yes, by switching to T8 LED tubes of the same length, as long as you follow the wiring specified for the tube (ballast and starter removal depending on the model). With old or damaged housings, it's often quicker and safer to fit a complete LED batten straight away.
Which colour temperature for a warehouse or workshop?
4000 K (neutral white) for workshops and workstations, 6000 K (cool white) for warehouses, stockrooms and car parks. CCT battens let you choose the colour temperature at installation with a single SKU.
