It is highly recommended to get a cover to avoid any unfortunate incidents.

How is this end cap fitted to the strip?

It simply clips onto the connector at the end of the strip, with no tools required. It is recommended to fit one at each cut end of the strip to prevent any risk of accidental electric shock.
