For this, calling in a qualified professional is strongly recommended to ensure safe connection and installation. However, you can wire a recessed spotlight yourself with a few tools by following precise steps. Silumen, your trusted expert in home lighting solutions, tells you everything you need to know to wire your recessed spotlights successfully.

The recessed LED spotlight: a discreet, high-performance lighting solution

The recessed LED spotlight is a light fitting that is both stylish and practical. As its name suggests, it is a lighting solution designed to be recessed into a ceiling. It is designed so that most of it is hidden, giving a highly minimalist, designer result. Because of their small size, recessed spotlights are usually bought in multiples to light a space effectively.

The recessed spotlights available on Silumen.com all feature LED technology, a more economical and durable alternative to traditional lighting solutions such as halogen. By replacing your old fittings with recessed LED spotlights, you can enjoy years of reliable lighting and lower energy consumption.

Choosing the best recessed LED spotlight for your needs

Before moving on to wiring and installing recessed spotlights at home, you first need to choose the ideal model for your space. To do this, it helps to learn a little more about the different features of this fitting. Depending on your needs and on factors such as the humidity of the room or the diameter of an existing cut-out, you can choose the spotlight to recess in your home by considering the following criteria:

The light output of recessed spotlights

If you need a specific light output, it is important to check the power of your recessed spotlights. It is often shown in watts in the product name, and you can also find this information on the recessed spotlight's technical data sheet (along with its luminous flux in lumens).

The light colour of a recessed LED spotlight

The light colour you need depends on the atmosphere you want to create at home and on the room you want to light. For example, if you want to add discreet, warm-toned lighting to your living room, choose warm white recessed spotlights.

The design and dimensions of recessed LED spotlights

Recessed spotlights are usually round, but they also come in a square shape. You can choose the recessed spotlights to install at home according to your preferences in terms of appearance, colour and dimensions.

The protection rating of a recessed spotlight

Before installing recessed spotlights outdoors or in damp rooms, it is important to check how waterproof they are by looking at their protection rating.

The cut-out diameter

If you want to replace old recessed spotlights or there are already holes in your ceiling, you need to check that the cut-out diameter of the LED spotlights you want to buy is the same as that of the existing hole (you will find this information in the product's technical details).

Tools needed to wire a recessed spotlight

To successfully wire and fit a recessed LED spotlight, you need to get your tools ready in advance. If the switch, power supply and circuit breaker are already in place, you will still need:

  • The recessed LED spotlight to be installed.
  • Wire strippers.
  • Two connectors.
  • A hole saw: used to cut the opening your spotlight will be recessed into.
  • A screwdriver.
  • A compass with a pencil.
  • A low-voltage transformer with the right power rating is needed if your spotlight does not run on 220V.

How do I wire my recessed LED spotlight correctly?

To successfully connect your recessed spotlight, there are several steps to follow, from drawing up a wiring diagram to switching your LED spotlight on for the first time to test it.

Steps for connecting and fitting a recessed spotlight

Once you have gathered the equipment and finalised the wiring diagram, follow these steps:

  • Switch off the power: this first step is essential for any electrical installation to keep you safe.
  • Mark the desired position of the spotlight using the compass and pencil.
  • Cut through the ceiling with the hole saw after working out the required cut-out diameter (spotlight diameter = diameter to cut). The spotlight will be recessed into this hole once your wiring is complete.
  • Pull out the cable from your home's electrical system and strip its end with the wire strippers.
  • Connect the spotlight to the electrical system cable using the two connectors, taking care to respect the polarity (live and neutral). The spotlight's lampholder may not be polarised. In that case, simply connect its two wires to the two wires of the supply cable.
  • Place the recessed spotlight in the opening you made earlier.
  • Switch the power back on and turn on the recessed LED spotlight to check that the circuit works.

Drawing up a wiring diagram for your recessed LED spotlights

A key step in wiring a recessed spotlight is drawing a diagram of it. The wiring diagram for your recessed spotlight is a graphic representation of the electrical circuit to be set up for it to work properly. It shows all the equipment needed to connect your recessed spotlight, along with where each item goes.

Wiring recessed spotlights in series

If you want to wire recessed spotlights in series, you can follow the same steps as above. In addition, you need to work out how many spotlights to install to get satisfactory lighting in your room. It is also important to check the maximum number of spotlights you can connect to your supply to keep your electrical installation safe. You then need to connect the spotlights to each other one after the other (wired electrically in parallel: live to live, neutral to neutral, earth to earth for Class I), with only the first spotlight connected to the supply, before placing each spotlight in its cut-out.

Connecting a recessed LED spotlight with a transformer

In some cases, the recessed LED spotlight runs at low voltage (12V) and cannot be connected directly to the 220V mains. In this case, you need a spotlight transformer. The steps for wiring spotlights with a transformer are practically the same, apart from a few extra steps. Instead of connecting your recessed spotlight directly to the supply, you first connect it to the transformer. You then connect the transformer to the electrical system cable, respecting the polarity (using two connectors).

The different ways to install a recessed spotlight

Recessed spotlights are lighting solutions that can be installed throughout the home. Whether you have a suspended ceiling or an insulated ceiling, they will undoubtedly find their place. They can also be fitted in covered outdoor areas, and some models are designed to be recessed into the ground!

Installing one or more recessed LED spotlights in an indoor ceiling

A recessed spotlight can be installed in 3 types of indoor ceiling:

  • Suspended ceilings: recessed spotlights are most often paired with suspended ceilings for convenience, as installation is easier.
  • Insulated ceilings: if you want to fit recessed spotlights in an insulated ceiling, you will need a protective cover to separate the spotlight from the insulation material (which must never come into contact with the spotlight's lampholder).
  • Low ceilings: we recommend choosing ultra-slim recessed LED spotlights if your ceiling void is shallow.

Installing a recessed spotlight in a covered outdoor area

As long as the spotlight can be properly recessed, it can be installed in a covered outdoor area. This lets you enjoy its ultra-discreet look while lighting your outdoor spaces. However, you need to make sure your recessed spotlight is rated IP44 or higher, giving it resistance to splashing water from all directions. You can also opt for an IP65-rated recessed spotlight for maximum protection against water and dust.

Installing a recessed LED spotlight in the ground

LED spotlights are not only recessed into ceilings. Some models are specially designed to be installed in the ground, to mark out areas such as the edges of a swimming pool: this is the case with the 1W recessed LED spotlight. It has an IP65 protection rating, making it a waterproof lighting solution. What sets in-ground recessed spotlights apart is their robustness, an essential feature as they are more exposed to the risk of impact (a spotlight recessed in the ground can, for example, be stepped or driven on).
