How to wire an LED spotlight with a transformer

Updated on 6 min readSilumen technical team

LED technology has become the star of modern home lighting. The enthusiasm for this type of lighting, available in a huge variety of models, not least the excellent LED spotlights, is mainly due to its very low power consumption. At a time when saving energy is a major concern for households, LED spotlights and similar lights generally run at low voltage for an economical, high-quality lighting installation. This means the mains current, which in its raw state (220V alternating current) is unsuitable for a low-voltage LED installation, has to be converted. Hence the need for a compatible transformer when wiring your LED spotlights, unless the model you have is already fitted with one.

Why connect an LED spotlight to a transformer?

A transformer is essential equipment for a low-voltage home installation. To grasp its importance, it helps first to understand what it does. The transformer is a component of the electrical circuit which, installed between the power source and the load (here, an LED spotlight), converts 220V alternating current into low-voltage direct current, at a value that varies with the model chosen. As it comes from the electricity supplier and the wall socket, mains current is not compatible with an LED spotlight that runs at low voltage. Including a transformer when wiring an LED spotlight is therefore a must. For example, installing and wiring a 12V LED spotlight requires a 220V to 12V transformer fitted upstream in the circuit for it to work properly. Beyond their unrivalled energy performance, LED lights are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Wiring an LED spotlight with a compatible transformer therefore lets you get the best out of the fitting and ensures it lasts.

How to choose your LED spotlights and transformer

LED spotlights are undoubtedly among the most popular light fittings of the moment. Combining an ultra-modern design, for a clean and elegant look, with the light quality and energy performance of LED technology, ceiling spotlights are the ideal fitting for your indoor spaces. Whether you want them recessed, dimmable, adjustable or on a track, indoor LED spotlights are available in every possible version in Silumen's extensive catalogue.

Select the LED spotlights that suit you best based on their design, the light colour you want, how they are installed and, above all, their wattage. The brightness of the light and its power consumption both depend on it. Choosing the right transformer for wiring the spotlight is also linked to the wattage of the fitting, since this determines the optimal operating voltage of the light according to the current, following the formula P = U x I.

However, Silumen saves you the trouble of worrying about this detail when buying your LED spotlights, as all our models come with a transformer compatible with the LED spotlight wiring as standard! It is still useful to know how to select the right transformer for an LED spotlight in case you already own a low-voltage LED spotlight without a suitable transformer. The transformer built into the spotlight may also stop working. In that case, rather than replacing the whole fitting, you can simply swap it for a new transformer bought separately.

In practice, the transformer to include when wiring your LED spotlight is selected according to the technical characteristics (voltage and wattage) of the fitting. So a 12V spotlight is paired with a 220V to 12V transformer for optimal wiring. Following the same logic, you need an 18W transformer to connect an LED spotlight of similar or slightly lower wattage. Bear in mind that the right transformer guarantees the longevity and optimal operation of your ceiling spotlight. As these fittings come in a wide range of wattages and therefore voltages, the choice of suitable transformers is just as wide. At Silumen you will find:

For your information, all our transformer models for wiring LED spotlights are certified protected against solid objects, with a minimum protection rating of IP20. You can therefore use them with confidence for your indoor lighting installation.

What you need to wire a spotlight with a transformer

Wiring a low-voltage LED spotlight with a transformer is an easy DIY job that does not require much. Naturally, to install the fitting, you need the LED spotlight to be wired and the compatible transformer. Silumen delivers them to you in the same pack. You will also need a hole saw to cut an opening suited to the spotlight's recessed housing at the chosen spot in the ceiling. Assuming the power cable is already in place and you have no other work to do on the circuit apart from connecting the spotlight and its transformer, these items should be enough to get the job done.

Steps for wiring an LED spotlight with a transformer

Once you have gathered everything you need to wire the LED spotlight and its transformer, you can move on to the installation itself. If in doubt, do not hesitate to call in a professional to take over. If, however, you are confident in your DIY skills, start by switching off the power supply for your safety. You then need to:

  • Cut a hole in the suspended ceiling matching the dimensions of the spotlight's base, if it is a recessed model or an ultra-slim LED spotlight.
  • Pull the power cable through to the opening and strip the wires with wire strippers.
  • Connect the transformer to the power supply following the principles of standard wiring: live to the red wire, neutral to the blue wire.
  • Plug the transformer connector into the LED spotlight connector: on the models we offer, this is usually a jack-type plug. In some cases, the transformer supplied is attached directly to the fitting.
  • Fit the LED spotlight into the opening provided, making sure to install a spotlight heat sink to avoid contact with the ceiling insulation.
  • Repeat the same operation for the other spotlights if you are installing several LED spotlights, then check that the circuit works.

Where should I install my LED spotlights with a transformer?

LED spotlights are very versatile fittings. Their clean, elegant and minimalist design fits into every corner of the house, providing quality lighting wherever they are installed. In fact, wiring your 12V or higher LED spotlights with the right transformer can be done anywhere in the home: from the bedroom to the living room and the hallway. However, make sure you install them in a room free of humidity, as the IP20 protection rating of the spotlight transformers in our catalogue does not protect them against moisture. Although some of our LED spotlight models are certified waterproof, the transformer remains vulnerable to damp.
